Possible Causes of Windows Update Problems

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates. Windows update problems have to be one of the more annoying errors you will see when working on computers. They always seem to crop up just as you are finishing a repair. These are some of the problems and the solutions to some Windows update problems I have encountered. I hope they save you some time.

You may receive the following error message:

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page. The necessary service "Automatic Updates" (WUAUSERV) is not started or Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is disabled. Error 0x8DDD0018

Some common causes for problems with the Windows Update service.

  1. First double check the date and time on your computer. If they are too far off, Windows Update will not work.

  2. Another common problem is that there is a problem with the Windows update program files. Please refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base article by clicking on the link below for information about fixing this problem.

  3. Sometimes the Automatic Updates service or the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is missing. This problem is frequently caused by a virus or a trojan. The first thing you will need to do is makes sure the malicious software is removed from your computer. Next follow the instructions in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article by clicking on the link below to reinstall the Automatic Updates service or the Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

  4. The computer used to be part of a domain and was not properly removed from the network before it was taken out of service for use without the domain. This will sometimes cause an "Access is denied" error when trying to do updates or you can not start the automatic update service. Please refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base article by clicking on the link below for information about fixing this problem.

  5. Error code 0x80070005, an access denied error, on Widows 2003 Server R2 can sometimes be caused by the Indexing Service locking files. Temporarily stop the indexing service to install the updates.
