Hard Disk Drive Speed Reference

IDE/Parallel ATA (abbreviated PATA)

IDE/ATA-1 first appeared in Compaq PCs in 1986 speeds range from 2.1 MB/s to 8.3 MB/s.

ATA-2/Fast ATA speeds up to 16.6 MB/s.

ATA-3 improved version of ATA-2 speeds up to 16.6 MB/s.

Ultra ATA speeds up to 33.3 MB/s.

Ultra ATA 66 speeds up to 66.6 MB/s.

Ultra ATA 100 speeds up to 100 MB/s.

Ultra ATA 133 speeds up to 133 MB/s.

Serial ATA (abbreviated SATA)

SATA I is the first generation SATA interface released on January 7, 2003 running at 1.5 Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput is up to 150MB/s.

SATA II is the second generation SATA interface released in April of 2004 running at 3.0 Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput is up to 300MB/s. SATA II is backward compatibility to SATA I ports, the maximum speed of the drive will be slower due to the lower speed limitations of the port.

SATA III is the third generation SATA interface released on May 27, 2009 running at 6.0 Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput is up to 600MB/s. SATA III is backward compatibility with SATA I and SATA II ports, the maximum speed of the drive will be limited to the speed limitations of the port.
